Matis Paris: French Skincare Craft, Who It Serves, and What Is New

Matis Paris belongs to a small group of beauty houses that have grown older without becoming dated. The brand was founded in 1936 by pharmacist Dr. Eugène Mavromati, who prepared the first formulas behind his dispensary on Rue Fontaine in Paris’s 9th arrondissement. The name itself comes from the Greek μάτια — “eyes” or “gaze.” That origin is not a marketing flourish: the founder’s early signature work was eye-contour care, and the idea that skin expresses a woman’s life, not only her age, still sits at the centre of the house.

Almost ninety years later Matis remains a vertically integrated French laboratory brand. Formulas are developed in its own research centre and manufactured in an 8,000 m² ISO 22716-certified plant in Cosmetic Valley, near Paris. Home products are organised as Réponses; professional cabin protocols are called Solutions. The standing promise is deliberately simple: each woman should receive a treatment, a ritual and a precise answer.

Strengths that still distinguish the house

The first advantage is control. Matis owns its formulas, its factory and a large part of its professional training chain. That is rare in a market where many “prestige” names outsource both development and production. Made in France is not a slogan here; it is the entire production path, from laboratory to shipment.

The second advantage is professional DNA. Matis was built for institutes, not only for bathroom shelves. Beauty therapists work with a Skin Analyser that reads eight visible and invisible parameters in minutes, then prescribe a protocol and a home ritual. Cabin work includes signature massages inspired by kabuki rhythm and modern facialist technique. Retail products are designed as the continuation of that protocol, not as a separate commercial line.

The third advantage is the French sensorial school. Matis treats texture and fragrance as part of efficacy, not as decoration. The internal triad is Skin, Science and Senses: a formula must act, but it must also be pleasant enough to be used every day. That is why the brand still talks about “haute couture formulas” — concentrated actives married to a specific galenic and a recognisable scent.

The fourth advantage is range architecture. Instead of one hero cream for everyone, Matis builds targeted Réponses: Caviar for a high-sensorial anti-age ritual with French caviar from Aquitaine; Cell signatures with white-rose stem cells; Densité and Densifiance for firmness and facial oval; Délicate for sensitive and reactive skin; Éclat / Glow for dull, tired complexions; Regard for the eye area; Fondamentale for daily cleansing; Soleil for sun care; plus body and spa protocols. Precious actives are often local: Limousin saffron, Brittany seawater and algae, French white rose, Aquitaine caviar.

Since 2020 the house has also tightened its formulation charter: fewer controversial raw materials, less cellophane, more recyclable and refillable packaging, preference for RSPO-certified supply where relevant. Effectiveness, texture and fragrance remain the three qualities the brand refuses to sacrifice.

Who the products are for

Matis is not a mass supermarket brand and not a closed ultra-luxury house either. It sits in professional and premium institute cosmetics: visible results, a complete cabin menu, and a home ritual that a therapist can explain in five minutes.

The historic core client is a woman from her mid-thirties onward who has started to see loss of firmness, first wrinkles, dullness or a change in facial contour and wants a structured answer rather than a trend product. The same architecture, however, is built to hold a client for decades: prevention in the twenties, sensitive-skin care, radiance protocols, eye contour, post-procedure recovery and body contouring. Dermatologically tested formulas and dedicated sensitive lines make the brand usable for reactive skin, which is often excluded from rich anti-age textures.

A second audience is the professional: salon owners and therapists who need a French house with training, protocols, diagnostic tools and retail that does not collapse into a few best-sellers. Matis still thinks like a laboratory that works with institutes, not like a pure e-commerce label that added a spa kit later.

Latest news and products

The most strategic launch of 2026 is INTENSIVE, led by Time-Global Serum and Time-Global Cream. The duo is positioned as targeted anti-ageing for skin that “demands more”: loss of firmness, uneven texture, dehydration and faded radiance, with a claim to address ten key signs of ageing while respecting the skin barrier. The serum is a lightweight concentrator and booster; the cream completes the ritual with comfort, elasticity support and daily protection. In mid-2026 both products were named finalists at the Attracta Beauty Awards, which gave the new line an early trade signal beyond the brand’s own channels.

CELL-EYES, also highlighted in 2026, extends the Cell signature into longevity-inspired eye care. The area is treated not only as a place to conceal puffiness and fine lines, but as a zone whose cellular mechanisms need earlier support. The texture is a light, fragrance-free gel-cream with a non-greasy finish and a cryo-massage applicator, so makeup can follow immediately.

For sensitive and overheated skin, SENSI-PETAL MASK has become one of the most discussed recent gestures. It uses a “metamorphosis” texture: a pink gel infused with calendula petals that melts into oil on the skin and becomes a milky rinse with water. The soothing complex combines sunflower flower, a biomimetic peptide, saffron flower and calendula. After 28 days of twice-weekly use in a self-assessment on 22 women, 100% reported soothed, comfortable skin, 95% noted less tightness and overheating, and 86% found redness less visible.

In 2025 the brand also answered the boom in office aesthetic procedures with Cica-Perf, a fragrance-free regenerative cream for skin marked by superficial laser, peel or tattoo work. It is designed to form a protective “bandage” film, support comfort and help the appearance of recovery day after day. On the body side, Slim Instant (presented in the Slim Sense conversation) is a firming and refining gel aimed at cellulite and a flatter-looking abdomen. Parallel to this, Réponse Éclat / Glow — Glow Essence, Glow Serum, Glow Detox, Glow Aging and Glow-C Mask — has been pushed as a vitamin C and Activ-Glow ritual for tired, uneven complexions. Cell-Rejuvenate remains the intensive 28-day reset aligned with the skin’s renewal cycle.

Why the brand still matters

Matis is not trying to win the loudest social-media week. Its wager is older and more stubborn: that professional French skincare can stay sensorial, that a woman can be accompanied from first prevention to mature skin inside one coherent map of Réponses, and that a formula is only complete when it works in the cabin and on the bathroom shelf. For clients who want Parisian institute culture rather than a disposable trend, that remains the point of the house.
